The fastest way to transfer data between two computers
Dernière mise à jour : 20 mai
Did you know there are several ways to transfer data between computers—but what is the fastest method? Surprisingly, the fastest way is also one of the oldest, and it’s still widely used today: connecting two machines directly with an Ethernet cable to form a simple two‑device network. One end of the cable plugs into the first computer, the other end into the second—no external media required.
In this setup, you don’t even need to assign IP addresses; the connection works without them. Once the cable is connected, open File Explorer on the first computer, go to Network, and you’ll see the other machine listed as part of the same network. When you try to access it, you’ll be prompted for the username and password of the second computer (the one you want to connect to). Enter those credentials, and you’ll gain access.
From there, you can copy and paste files directly. The transfer speed feels almost like moving data within the same computer, making it ideal for sensitive or very large files. Another advantage is that you don’t need any intermediate storage devices—the data flows straight from one machine to the other.
It’s a simple, efficient, and still one of the fastest methods for direct data transfer.
