Difference Between Upgrade, Update, and Migration
Dernière mise à jour : 20 mai
Understanding the distinction between these terms is crucial when managing software systems like Vtiger, Joomla, or Exchange environments.

Update
An update refers to moving from one minor version to another within the same major branch.
Example: Switching from version 2.5.27 to 2.5.28
You stay within the 2.5 branch, applying incremental improvements or bug fixes.
Updates do not allow you to jump to the next major version.
Upgrade
An upgrade means transitioning to a new major version of the same software.
Example: Moving from 2.5.28 to 3.4.1
You shift from the 2.5 branch to the 3.x branch, gaining new features and architecture changes.
Requires compatibility checks and possibly data migration within the same platform.
Migration
Migration involves switching from one software system to another entirely.
Example: Moving from SugarCRM to Vtiger CRM
You abandon the old platform and adopt a new one, often for better features, support, or pricing.
Migration is not free, but vendors may offer discounted licenses or preferential terms (e.g., CodeTwo Exchange migration tools).
Term | Scope | Example | Notes |
Update | Minor version | 2.5.27 → 2.5.28 | Same branch, bug fixes |
Upgrade | Major version | 2.5.28 → 3.4.1 | New features, same platform |
Migration | Platform switch | SugarCRM → Vtiger CRM | New system, data transfer required |
